This line by Anna Magnani is remembered even by those who have never seen her films and barely know her story.
They contain everything that made her singular: pride, stubbornness, a refusal to please at any cost, and fearlessness.
And in the beginning, there was Rome — not yet La Dolce Vita, but already its premonition. Cinecittà challenged Hollywood, and the Eternal City became a film set.  On the terraces of Via Veneto, mafiosi, politicians and movie stars pressed together — the Roman glitter that Fellini would soon turn into myth.
At the heart of that cinematic explosion, with all its glamour, noise and vanity, stood Italy’s greatest actress: Anna Magnani.
Tonight, she cannot sleep. She wanders through the sleeping city, along its echoing cobblestones. Rome, which once opened the way to fame for her, has become the stage set of her life, and now its dark piazzas and narrow alleys, like labyrinths of memory, summon back those who once stood beside her: Vittorio De Sica, Roberto Rossellini, Carlo Ponti, Suso Cecchi d’Amico. And with them come love, despair, betrayal and pain.
At dawn, a call from Los Angeles will tell Anna whether she is to become the first Italian actress to win the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Magnani has no idea that, before the night is over, an unexpected visitor will appear on her doorstep. And with him will come rushing back everything she never managed to leave behind…
