In the sweltering heat of a New York summer, Richard Sherman sends his wife Helen and their young son off to Maine for vacation, leaving him alone in Manhattan. At first, solitude feels like freedom. But summer in the city can be a dangerous thing—especially for a man who has been married for seven years and suddenly finds himself alone with an overactive imagination.

Richard is a respectable husband, a successful publisher of paperback books, and a man whose mind is thoroughly saturated with melodramatic notions of temptation, guilt, and catastrophe. Then she arrives.

A beautiful young blonde moves into the apartment upstairs—light as a summer breeze and entirely unaware of the havoc she is about to unleash. Not so much a woman as a charming catastrophe waiting to happen.

As fantasy begins to blur with reality, Richard finds himself caught between temptation, self-inflicted guilt, and increasingly elaborate daydreams. A previously faithful husband with a dangerously active imagination suddenly faces a question far more unsettling than infidelity itself: what happens when the greatest threat to a marriage is not desire, but imagination?

For in the end, this is not really a story about adultery. It is a story about how difficult it can be to remain virtuous when left alone with temptation—and with oneself.
