Wolf Eyes to play at Skaņu Mežs event in Riga

On June 13 legendary U.S. noise music group Wolf Eyes will play a show at Riga, Latvia’s 1983 bar. The concert starts at 20:00, and tickets can be purchased at www.ticketservice.lv for 15 EUR; they will cost 20 EUR at the entrance. The event is organized by Skaņu Mežs association for adventurous music - the last time Skaņu Mežs collaborated with Wolf Eyes, was more than 17 years ago. The event is part of Skaņu Mežs’ concert series 1 - 2 cauri! which, during 2024, will be supported by the Culture Capital Foundation of Latvia.

Wolf Eyes is a band from Michigan that was formed in 1998. They are known for their bizarre and otherworldly approach to music. Creating a sound that is both disturbing and hypnotic. The band has released numerous albums and EPs on various labels. With their intense and bizarre live performances, Wolf Eyes has garnered a reputation as one of the most frightening and weird bands in the world. Wolf Eyes is currently John Olson and Nate Young. They have performed together for over 20 years.

Wolf Eyes performed last year at Le Guess Who? and iDEALfest amongst others, and will continue touring Europe in 2024 with performances at two editions of Primavera Sound, other than sharing the stage with their long-time legendary collaborator, the avantgarde saxophone player Anthony Braxton.

Their 2023 album “Difficult Messages”, featuring various collaborators, was described by The Wire magazine as "a greatest hits comp from another planet” while “The Quietus” added that “"it captures something of the underlying culture of folk weirdness that Wolf Eyes spring from and continue to be apart of”. Similar song structures and collaborative methods were explored on two further releases: “Dreams in Splattered Lines” and “More Difficult Messages”.

Wolf Eyes have collaborated with such artists as Smegma, John Wiese, Merzbow, Black Dice and Aaron Dilloway, who was a full-time member of the band between 1998 and 2005.

Wolf Eyes played in Riga in 2006 and 2007. In 2013, when Skaņu Mežs festival celebrated its 10th birthday, band member Nate Young was asked to create an alternate soundtrack for the classic Latvian film “Nāves Ēnā” (“In the Shadow of Death”).
