Jurija Natsvlišvili Riga Spring Quartet: Džezs ārpus rāmjiem
Yurii Natsvlishvili’s Riga Spring Quartet: Jazz Unframed
May 16 | ???? 19:00
Zuzeum Art Centre, Great exhibition hall
Continuing the tradition of uniting music and visual art, Zuzeum Art Centre and Yurii Natsvlishvili’s Riga Spring Quartet invite you to a special acoustic jazz concert, marking the final weekend of the exhibition Unframed.
Whether you're visiting the exhibition for the first time or returning, this concert will offer a new way to experience the work of powerful works of three Baltic women artists — Malle Leis, Maija Tabaka, and Marija Teresė Rožanskaitė — through sound, rhythm, and emotion.
This instrumental performance pays tribute to jazz legends Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, whose artistic legacies continue to inspire with their bold individuality, deep emotional range, and boundary-pushing creativity. Though this concert features no vocals, the soul of their music is brought to life through sound — in the nuanced dialogue of trombone, vibraphone, double bass, and drums.
What makes this evening especially meaningful is that all five women — the three Baltic visual artists and the two jazz greats — were active during the same era. From different corners of the world and through different mediums, they expressed the complexities of identity, femininity, and creativity during the 20th century. While Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan gave shape to emotion through sound, Leis, Tabaka, and Rožanskaitė captured it on canvas. Their lives and works, though shaped by different political and cultural realities, resonate with a shared spirit of artistic freedom and fearless experimentation.
This concert creates a poetic bridge between them — a conversation across time and space where jazz becomes the common language. Malle Leis’s vibrant florals reflect the energy and spontaneity of jazz improvisation. Maija Tabaka’s emotionally rich portraits mirror jazz’s introspective depth. Marija Teresė Rožanskaitė’s conceptual works challenge norms much like jazz did — daring, bold, and boundary-pushing. Together, the music and visual art merge into one immersive sensory experience — where color moves like rhythm and rhythm carries the color of thought.
