On Thursday, November 27th the Palladium Riga concert hall will host a true virtuosos of contemporary electronic soul, the up-and-coming musician, songwriter, and producer Sohn. The highly anticipated music event will be opened by the acclaimed local producer and beat-maker Niklāvz. Tickets starting from EUR 15.
Sohn (stylised SOHN), born Christopher Taylor, is an English musician, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer based in Vienna, Austria. Critics often compare his musical style to those of James Blake, Bon Iver and How to Dress Well. Along with his own work, Sohn has also worked extensively with other artists, including Lana Del Rey, BANKS, Kwabs and Rhye. Sohn’s live performances are always marked by a mix of his distinctively powerful vocals, sombre piano chords and a clear electronica accompaniment, delivering a fascinating surrealist feeling.
In a recent interview, Sohn admitted that his Riga performance will be like “[…] a story from the beginning to the end, and not a show that one can simply run out of and then return for the two final songs.” Sohn’s performance will be opened by the popular local producer and Dirty Deal Audio collective member Niklāvz, real name Niklāvs Sekačs. Electronica aficionados will know him from local events, such as Tallinn Music Week and Satta Outside festival, as well as international festivals, like Spain’s Primavera Sound and others.
Sohn’s debut album Tremors (2014) was recently released by 4AD, whose artist roaster includes The National, St. Vincent, Pixies, Grimes, Future Islands, Daughter and many more. The Guardian describes Sohn’s music as sadwave and slowtronica-like minimalist electronic soul, with vocals that, unlike with other artists of the genre, are “intrinsic to his work” rather than an afterthought and often take centre stage.
