12 of December “Arēnā Rīga”
Anniversary concert of legendary
SMOKIE ORCHESTRA
55 YEARS IN ROCK
It is almost unbelievable that this year already 55 years have passed since October 1963 when legendary English band “Smokie” was founded. The band at first was formed as “The Yen” after a chance meeting between Ron Kelly and Alan Silson in Moore's Music Shop, Bradford, in October 1963. The band at first was originally named “The Yen”, then “The Sphynx”, and later on “Essence”. In honor of this event, on December 12, 2018, in “Arena Riga” we will hear legendary band SMOKIE.
Two days after that meeting they were joined by Chris Norman for rehearsals, but without finding a suitable bass player, just practiced together for a year. The addition of Terry Uttley on bass guitar at the beginning of 1965 completed the line-up. The band was finally complete and could begin its glorious journey. However “Smokie” needed another 10 years to climb to the top of the glory with songs that had been aroused by millions of listeners. The most popular hits – “If You Think You Know How to Love Me”, “Do not Play Your Rock’ n ‘Roll To Me”, “Something's Been Making Me Blue”, “Wild Wild Angels”, “I'll Meet You At Midnight”, “Living Next Door to Alice”, “Lay Back in the Arms of Someone”, “Needles and Pins” and “Stumblin In” – have made the band members superstars.
The rock band “Smokie” till this day have remained one of the greatest and most famous British bands. During its career, the band collected an impressive collection of silver, gold and platinum disks, selling millions of entries worldwide.
The band “Smokie” will celebrate its anniversary year on the stage “Arena Riga” in Riga, Latvia, giving a warm and soulful concert, which will be complemented by a symphony orchestra.
