Mogwai's music is often referred to as post-rock, which is an atmospheric, guitar-based soundscape. Listening to it is like a meditative experience, where you forget the concept of time. The space you're in physically becomes irrelevant, as it is so filled with sound that there is no room left for anything else. That’s why, in Mogwai’s post-rock, lyrics are unnecessary as they would only distract from the music. The instrumental sounds are the main focus and are not just a background accompaniment.
Mogwai is a Scottish post-rock band formed in 1995 in Glasgow. The band’s lineup has remained consistent since its formation, with Stuart Braithwaite, Barry Burns, Dominic Aitchison, and Martin Bulloch. Their debut single, "Tuner"/"Lower", was released in February 1996, and by the end of that year, the prestigious British music magazine "NME" ("New Musical Express") had named their track "Summer" as Single of the Week. The same honor was given to their next single, "New Paths to Helicon". By then, they had already gained a loyal fan base, which continued to grow with each new album release.
The band's music stimulates the imagination, and it’s easy to picture it as a vivid sensory complement to visual works. In 2006, Mogwai composed the soundtrack for the film "Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait", which was later released as a separate album. That same year, their songs "Auto Rock" and "We're No Here" were featured in the film "Miami Vice", and they collaborated with Clint Mansell and "Kronos Quartet" on the soundtrack for "The Fountain". Mogwai also created a special track for Amnesty International's charity project "Peace" in 2010. Since then, they've continued their collaborations, and their most recent work was the music for the Apple TV+ series "Black Bird", released in 2022 as a collection of unusually short tracks for the band.
Mogwai, in collaboration with PLUS1, supports the organization War Child. €1 from each ticket sold will be donated to help War Child protect, educate, and defend the rights of children affected by war.
