Merzbow & Balázs Pándi to play at Skaņu Mežs 2017

In 2017, Skaņu Mežs will celebrate its 15th anniversary. The festival will take place at the music house “Daile” on October 13th and 14th with an opening event on October 6 at the art museum Riga Bourse. The first announced act of this festival edition is the duo of Merzbow, the Japanese noise musician, held as one of the most important artists in the field, and Balázs Pándi, a drummer active in experimental metal, noise and free jazz. They will play on October 14.

Folk singer Stu Larsen will perform in Riga coming fall

On September 28th an Australian singer, songwriter and folk musician Stu Larsen will perform at Latvian 1st Rock Cafe (Riga, Marstalu 2/4). It will be his first time in Latvia and this concert is to support his brand new album Resolute (to be released on July 21st). The previous, his debut album, is called Vagabond and was released in 2014. A relevant role in its making, record and producing took his friend, a romantic British singer songwriter Passenger, also known as Michael Rosenberg. It’s worth mentioning that Passenger show in Riga last fall was completely sold out.

Fink will perform in Latvia for the first time

British Folk-Rock, Blues and Indie band “Fink” will perform in Riga on Friday, 29th of September in concert hall Palladium. The trio will visit Latvia during a support tour of their upcoming brand new album to be rolling out in spring. “Fink” has released 7 albums until now, of which commercially most succesfull have been “Perfect Darkness” (2011) and “Hard Believer” (2014). 2015 CEV Beach Volleyball European Chamipnship – Jurmala masters at the end of May will bring us 75 best European beach volleyball players from 25 countries. It is the biggest beach volleyball event in five year time in Baltics.

Championship, which is going to take place on May 20-24 at the Baltic Beach Hotel & SPA beach stadium in Jurmala, has been included in the 2015 official beach volleyball calendar of the International Federation of Volleyball (FIVB) and in the international championship system. The leading beach volleyball team from Latvia Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins will also contest for the 25 000 EUR price pool and rating points.

Beach volleyball player Aleksandr Somoilov: ”After the Satellite tournament last year many athletes from other countries admitted that they were positively surprised by the large amount of fans, because some of the Grand Slam championships do not have so many fans as they were in Jurmala last year. The energy and support from our fans was very important when we played in our home country. Therefor I invite everyone to the Jurmala Masters championship, where you can spend splendid time with you family by the sea, while enjoying the athletic show!”

This year organizers paid particular attention to the sport and the promotion of the tournament, for the children and young people in various Latvian regions. For this purpose a student competition has been organized “Come along with your class to the European Championship!" the grand prize for winning this competition is free tickets to the finals of the “2015 CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship – Jurmala masters”, second and third place will get tickets to the Main Draw.

Till quarterfinals of the championship, which will take place on Saturday, games will be held on two beach volleyball courts: central court and an additional court. Quarterfinals and finals will be held only on the main court. The main court will be equipped with 2330 spectator seats.
